Mackinack Island and Thunder Bay Resort
September 13-16, 2020
September 13-16, 2020
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13:
Our deluxe motorcoach will depart Austintown this morning enroute to Mackinac Island. Rest stops and a lunch stop (on own) will be provided. Our last rest stop will be at Cops and Doughnuts in Clare, Michigan (a doughnut shop and bakery that has been in constant operation since 1896). In 2009 the business was within weeks of closing when the members of the Clare Police Department (all 9 of them) banded together to save this historic business. At Cops and Doughnuts we will enjoy a cup of coffee and a doughnut as well as the police décor, a gift shop and friendly atmosphere. This evening we will take a ferry ride to Mackinac Island where we will spend two nights at the Bicycle Street Inn in the heart of town. When you arrive on the island you will feel like you have just stepped back in time for there are no motorized vehicles allowed. All transportation is provided by horse-drawn carriage or bicycle. The evening will be free to explore this unique island at your leisure. Be sure to taste some of the famous Mackinac Island Fudge.
MONDAY,SEPTEMBER 14:
After a continental breakfast (included) we will board a carriage for a tour of the island to visit the scenic and historic points of interest. Our tour will end at the Grand Hotel where we will enjoy a fabulous luncheon buffet (included). After lunch you should take some time to explore this famous hotel where the movie “Somewhere in Time” was filmed. You can also take in the spectacular views of the Straits of Mackinac from a rocking chair on the “longest porch in the world”. The afternoon and evening are free to enjoy the island as you wish. You might want to rent a bike, take a stroll along Main Street, visit the many shops or just sit back and enjoy the scenery.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15:
After another continental breakfast (included) we will take a ferry to St. Ignace and then take a fascinating ride across the Mackinac Bridge. “The Mighty Mac” is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Enroute to Thunder Bay Resort we will make a rest stop at 40-Mile Point Lighthouse (which was built in 1896 to assist ships through the dangerous shoreline where open water, hidden shoals and false bays had claimed many vessels). Later today we will check into Thunder Bay Resort in Hillman, Michigan. This evening we will board a horse-drawn carriage that will take us through the wooded resort, cross a wooden bridge over Thunder Bay River and into the Elk Preserve. You will want to bring your camera to snap pictures of the majestic Bull Elk in their natural environment. Following the elk viewing experience we will follow the river’s edge to Elk Antler Log Cabin where we will indulge in a 5-Course Gourmet Dinner (included). During dinner we will also enjoy a cozy fire, up to 7 wines from the Sunrise Side Wine and Hops Trail and be entertained with storytelling from our host. This 4-hour slice of Northern Michigan heaven has been described as a “real-life fairytale” and declared by USA Today and Fox News as a “Top 10 Event”.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16:
After breakfast (included) at our hotel we will depart for home. On our way we will make a stop in Frankenmuth, Michigan (one of the most popular little towns in the state). Frankenmuth has been dubbed Michigan’s “Little Bavaria” and is home to Bronner’s (the largest Christmas store in the country). Dinner tonight will be on your own at an Ohio service plaza. From there we will continue home and should arrive back in Austintown between 7:45 – 8:15 p.m.
