Savannah, Georgia, Beaufort & Charleston, South Carolina
September 8-13, 2020
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8:
This morning we will depart from Austintown and Brimfield traveling south on our way to Rockhill, South Carolina where we will check into the LaQuinta Hotel. At this hotel we need to handle our own luggage.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9:
After our first of five included breakfasts we will continue south to Savannah, Georgia. Upon arriving we will have lunch (on own) at City Market and then take a 90 minute trolly tour for an overview of the largest restored National Historic District in our nation. Restored 18th Century homes, historic landmarks & museums nestle alongside restaurants, bars and shopping. Add the Oak trees that twist & turn in varied directions with the dripping Spanish moss like those that appear in flashes of lightning in a horror movie and you have the perfect southern look that you see in so many movies (all this and more). After our tour we will check into the Doubletree Savannah Historic District – our home for the next two nights. Dinner tonight is included at Mrs. Wilkes, a boarding house turned into a family-style restaurant known for famous southern cuisine. The balance of the evening is free.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10:
This morning we will take a tour of the Historic Davenport House Museum with the balance of the day and evening free to do as you wish. You will be given an all-day ticket (9:00 am – 4:30pm) for the hop on/off trolly which makes 16 stops in the District. This is a great way to explore the historic part of Savannah because you can take as much time as you want at each stop. The trolley departs every 20 minutes from each stop throughout the day. In addition to the above, you may want to have lunch or dinner (on your own) at the Pirates’ House and be sure to allow time to visit River Street and do some shopping in century old buildings, once cotton warehouses, that have been converted to antique shops, boutiques, galleries, brew pubs, fabulous restaurants and unique night spots (so much to do – so little time!).
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11:
Today we travel to Beaufort, South Carolina to experience the charm of this historic district, home to oak trees dripping with moss, Civil War Era Antebellum homes, historic churches and movie sites. Beaufort has always been a tourist destination for history lovers and has been deemed “The South’s Best Small Town” by (Southern Living Magazine). We will learn about the history of this unique little town while taking a horse and buggy tour. In addition to our tour we will have time to do some shopping and have lunch (on own) before traveling on to Charleston. Upon arriving a local guide will give us a tour of the highlights of Charleston followed by a visit to the Charleston City Market. The City Market is a historic market complex in downtown Charleston established in the 1790’s. You will have a few hours to browse, shop and have dinner (on own). Tonight, we will overnight at the Holiday Inn Express near Charleston.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12:
This morning we will tour Charleston’s most visited plantation, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. “Magnolia has been selected as one of America’s Most Beautiful Gardens” by (Travel & Leisure Magazine) and is the only garden honored with this distinction in the state of South Carolina! It was founded in 1676 and opened its doors to visitors in 1870 to view the beautiful flowers in its famous gardens making them the oldest public gardens in America. In addition to touring the gardens we will tour the Plantation House and take a Nature Tram tour. After departing Magnolia we will have lunch (included) and then onto our last overnight at the LaQuinta Hotel in Rock Hill, South Carolina. At this hotel we need to handle our own luggage.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13:
This morning we will depart for home. Rest stops and a lunch stop (on own) at Tamarack in West Virginia will be provided. We should arrive back in Brimfield around 8:30 p.m. and Austintown around 9:15 p.m.
